There is nothing called as a perfect parent. Parenting is a continuous process and we learn while we are at it. Well I am a professor by profession , but trust me I am learning the ways of life from my little one at every step of this wonderful journey. Get your parenting abc right

learning the abc of parenting

Your children are not your children. They are sons and daughters of life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, and though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts, for they have their own thoughts”  Khalil Gibran, The Prophet.

Having babies is a life changer as it gives you a whole new perspective of why you wake up every day. More than what you say, children observe what you do. ‘Preach what you practice’ is the new mantra of new age parenting.  With the omnipresent social – media illusion, ever-changing technology and the gargantuan virtual world playing havoc in our lives, the walls between private and public space has been shattered. In this vulnerable scenario, where insecurities creep in real easy, we as parents have to shoulder huge responsibilities of keeping our children protected and honing human skills. Trust me it’s not an easy task……. At this hour, what we need to give our children is

  • Roots – to stay grounded
  • Wings- to fly high with their head held high.

Me, as a parent of a chirpy 9 year old, will be sharing  some adorable experiences and a few tips that I guess shall help the newbie parents to make their journey more enjoyable and worthwhile.parenting

#1 Accelerate EQ

IQ has always been a buzzword, but what matters more is the emotional quotient. Emotional intelligence is a very important factor in shaping a person’s personality. Managing, controlling, perceiving and understanding emotions are a herculean task. So let’s raise kids with high EQ who shall be more empathetic and balanced. This will happen only if we listen to them and trust them with things. Patience is the key to raising emotional intelligence.

#2 Spare the rod

Gone are those days when parents used to believe in the adage ‘Spare the rod and spoil the child’.

To control the millennial generation one has to use his brain cells instead of the rod. This generation is impulsive, impatient and aggressive and at the same time is versatile and sharp.  So what works for them is a perfect blend of logic and patience.

#3 Time is the best investment –

Investments should always be thought over. Children are definitely not our fixed deposits. We should not hold on to them and curb their dreams and aspirations. The only thing that we can give the next generation is time…….time to listen to their woes, time to trouble shoot their issues.

So without much ado, let us join hands to raise a generation that is more compassionate and has human skills.

Happy parenting!!
